Selling Out
In an open letter from Larry Schweiger President and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation states that they have been working with Scotts Miracle Gro for the last 3 years. Still how can one justify trying to save the planet by working with a company that promotes and sells products that are destructive to the environment? Because they are well known and the largest supplier of toxins? Do not confuse supplier of toxins with maker, Scotts Miracle Gro doesn’t make Round Up, they just sell it.
I still cannot fathom how a company that is supposed to be bringing awareness to environmental issues and protecting our wildlife can justify selling out. However Mr. Schweiger has provided several reasons to justify this partnership:
- Common Ground. Scotts is just as committed as the National Wildlife Federation to getting families outdoors and reversing the alarming decline in songbird populations. We don’t see eye-to-eye on every issue, but we can agree to collaborate on these important objectives by encouraging outdoor play and backyard birding.
Really? You really expect us to buy this bullshit? Scotts offers a couple of organic products, their origins suspect by me at best, and it is ok? Yeah sure kids I just sprayed Round Up on our lawn to make it beautiful. Go out and play in the toxins and watch the birds dies.
- Track Record. We’ve worked with Scotts since 2009 on successful programs to combat global warming and restore habitat following the Gulf oil disaster. Those accomplishments provide a foundation of trust for future joint activities.
Oh wonderful, Monsanto RoundUp Ready plants to replace the beautiful natural landscape along the Gulf Coast. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, but hey they didn’t dump millions of tons of oil into the Gulf they just want to use other poisons to make it all better.
- Demonstrated Progress. We aren’t interested in greenwashing and neither is Scotts. So we took a close look at Scotts’ business practices and found a company making strides to develop alternatives to harmful chemicals and investing in cleaner, more organically based products.
And that isn’t greenwashing how? RoundUp is banned in so many other countries around the world because of its toxicity. I might being to believe this if they stopped selling it themselves. If they were to end their association with Monsanto based products maybe.
- Commitment to Sustainability. We will work with Scotts directly to advance important sustainability and conservation issues and promote ways to help reduce the impact of lawn and garden products on wildlife and wild places such as ponds, lakes, and streams.
Seriously, I just don’t buy it, they have a grand total of 6 organic products: garden soil, potting mix, plant food (2 types), blood meal and bone meal. I would question the origins of any of these products as to whether or not they were produced organically. Yet they are not offering any form of natural pest control.
- New Audiences. Scotts is one of America’s largest lawn-care and birdseed companies with more than 30 million households across the United States. This partnership expands our reach significantly allowing us to educate and influence millions of new potential conservationists.
And here we have it folks, the money that Scotts can put out on mass advertising. So basically the National Wildlife Federation is a whore now. Bottom line means more than truly looking out for the well being of the environment.
This is a match born of greed, plain and simple. Sadly though this is becoming a pattern where other smaller sustainable, eco-friendly businesses are partnering with companies that support Big Business and those companies that wish to impose their products on us and wipe out any other alternatives. This goes beyond believing in one political party or another. This is an impact on what we eat and how we live. Allowing partnerships like these to go unchecked and we will have no agricultural history, no natural habitats and no real food left.
I have signed the petition to stop this will you?

Replacing and Recycling
Replacing
We are progressing slowly but steadily in replacing certain food items. We have replaced chocolate syrup with our own recipe, our laundry and dishwasher detergents with homemade and attempted mayonnaise replacement. Next on the list is perfecting mayonnaise and going back to baking all of our breads and such.
Little changes every week and we are seeing some differences. I made enough detergents (with left over ingredients for more later on) that I can honestly we have saved about $30 per month. Chocolate syrup will probably save us about $5 per month. If we can manage to get the mayonnaise recipe right next time $3 per month. Bread and baked goods, including noodles, we will probably save another $40 to $50. Our final savings for this first month on groceries will be right around $80. That means $80 to go into homesteading supplies.
Recycling
We are cutting back on items that come heavily packaged but there are still a number items that end up creating trash. Plastic milk jugs are going to be mini greenhouses for seed starting as are 2 Liter soda bottles. Glass jars with lids can be used for storing goods, once we get the pickle smell out of them (I have two pickle monsters in my house). Egg cartons are being saved for seed starting and future egg layers. Any cans that we have are going to be turned into art work such as luminaries and plastic bags are being turned into plarn.
We are also working on some recycled art work that will be up in our store, including the best soil conditioner around, Authentic Haven Brand Manure Tea. A totally organic product produced in a closed system. We will also be offering a line of items with our new logo on t-shirts, hats and more through CafePress. Keep you eye out for it, you are going to love it!
